Brief Outline of Curriculum and Ranking System

 

All techniques are taught with self-defense applications in mind. The intension is to give students experience in tradition combined with practical and contemporary viewpoints on self-defense.

Aikido Curriculum and Ranking

Kyu classes (novice)

Shichi-Kyu - 7th class - white belt (beginning)

Roku-Kyu - 6th class - white belt (60 days, min)

Go-Kyu - 5th class - green belt (100 days TIG)

Yon-Kyu - 4th class - green belt (120 days TIG)

San-Kyu - 3rd class - brown belt (140 days TIG)

Ni-Kyu - 2nd class - brown belt (200 days TIG)

Ik-Kyu - 1st class - brown belt (300 days TIG)

(TIG = Time In Grade - training days since promotion)

Dan ranks (black belt)

Shodan - 1st degree

Nidan - 2nd degree

Sandan - 3rd degree

Yondan - 4th degree

Godan - 5th degree

Rokudan - 6th degree

Shichidan - 7th degree

Hachidan - 8th degree

Ranking System

 

The ranking system at Three Streams Aikido includes the following Kyu (class) and Dan (black belt rank) designations:

 

· Testing is usually scheduled two times a year.

· A test is a demonstration of a student's skills and competence in series of techniques applied against different attacks.

· Other factors considered when testing is being scheduled include attendance, attitude, knowledge of etiquette and terminology, and level of responsibility.

· The numbers in the parentheses in this section indicate the kyu level for which the corresponding technique will be tested.

Suwari waza                                                                  

· Shikko and Variations - Knee walking -turns-forward-backward (6)                         

· Mae Ukemi - Forward rolling (6)                        

· Ushiro Ukemi - Backward rolling (6)

                                

Tachi waza                                                                     

· Ashi sabaki  - footwork (6)                               

· Ayumi ashi  - "walking foot" - walking regularly, placing one foot in front of the other

· Tsugi ashi - "connecting foot" - moving forward or backward with one foot always   retaining its position in front of the other                        

· Hanmi - front foot is strait ahead and the back foot is 45-60 deg. Angle.  grounded, knees slightly bent.                              

 

· Ukemi - Rolling and breakfalls (6)

· Mae ukemi  - Forward rolling (6)

· Ushiro ukemi - Backward rolling (6)

· Mae ukemi tenkan  - Forward roll with spin (6)

· Kosa Ukemi - Cross rolling (6)

· Yoko Ukemi - Side breakfall (6)

· Zenpo Ukemi - Front breakfall (6)

· Koho Ukemi - Back breakfalls (6)

· Yoko Nagashi ukemi - Quiet ground drop roll (6)

· “Ping-pong” - Ukemi in the circle (5)

· Zenpo kaiten - Aerial breakfall, hands don't touch ground till slap (3)

 

· Tai sabaki - bodywork (6)

· Tenkan - Turn 180deg.

· Tai no tenkan=Tai no henko - Basic blending involving 180 turn

· Tenkai - Turn 90deg.

· Funecogi Undo - "Boat rowing movement"

 

· Ikkyo undo  - "high flying " reverse of funecogi undo

· Happo Undo - 8 directional ikkyo undo

· Katate Dori Irimi Gedan - Entering against wrist grab at waist or sligtly below level (6)

· Katate Dori Irimi Jodan - Entering against wrist grab at upper chest, shoulder  level (6)

· Soto Kiri Tenkan Ryo Mune Tori - Outside cut  with 180 spin v.s. throat grab (6)

· Soto Kiri Irimi Ryo Mune Tori - Outside cut  with entering + spin v.s. throat grab (6)

· Ukenagashi Tenkan Mune Tori - Rising wrist+ forearm deflection + 180spin v.s. throat grab (6)

· Ukenagashi Irimi Mune Tori - Rising wrist+ forearm deflection with entering + spin v.s.
throat grab (6)

· Shomen uchi ukenagashi - Elbow deflection(also known as "flowing parry") vs overhead strike (4)

· Yokomen uchi ukenagashi - Elbow deflection(also known as "flowing parry") vs side strike to the head (diagonal strike to the side of the head)

· Kao Tsuki Ukenagashi - Elbow deflection(also known as "flowing parry") vs puch to the face (4)

· Suriage Ryo Mune Tori - "Brushing" rising stroke v.s. throat grab (5)          

· Suriage Irimi Ryo Mune Tori - "Brushing" rising stroke + entering v.s. throat grab (5)

· Shomen uchi suriage - "Brushing" rising stroke v.s. overhead strike   (4)     

· Yokomen uchi suriage - "Brushing" rising stroke v.s. side strike to the head (diagonal strike to the side of the head) (4)                  

· Kao Tsuki Suriage - "Brushing" rising stroke v.s. punch to the face (4)

· Kao Tsuki Irimi Judan - Upper level deflection with entering v.s.punch to the face (4)

· Hara Tsuki Irimi Gedan - Low level deflection with entering v.s. punch to the stomach (4)

· Tenchi Nage - "Heaven and earth" throw, using aiki-age(raising hands up) + aiki-sage(lowering hands down) to break opponents balance , can be seen as variation of "extension+entering" throw (utilization of yin-yang principle) (4)

· Katate tori Sumi Otoshi - "Corner drop" throw vs same side wrist grab (4)

· Katate tori Seoi Nage - One arm shoulder throw vs same side wrist grab, use uke's intent of "leaning" or "pushing" forward (4)        

· Katate tori Kokyu nage - "Breath throw" vs same side wrist grab (4)

· Kosa katate Tori Ikkyo Omote & Ura - Cross wrist grab/ 1st control - Front and Back (3)
